SUMMARY:Community Sustainability Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:<strong>Community Sustainability Seminar</strong><br /><br
/>The Community Sustainability Program of the Global Cities Institute is
pleased to invite you to the 6th session in their seminar series for
 2010\, to be held on Wednesday 15 September 2010. &nbsp\;<br /><br
/>These seminars are open to researchers interested in the issues of
 community sustainability in global cities.&nbsp\;<br /><br />DATE:
 &nbsp\; &nbsp\;15 September &nbsp\;2010&nbsp\;<br />TIME: &nbsp\;
 &nbsp\; 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM&nbsp\;<br />VENUE: &nbsp\;Meeting Room\,
 Level 5\, Building 37\, RMIT.&nbsp\;<br /><br />Dr Yaso Nadarajah\,
Senior Research Fellow of the Globalism Research Centre &amp\; Global
Cities Research Institute will be presenting a brief overview of a
national study on The Practice of Polygamy in Malaysia and Community
 Wellbeing.&nbsp\;<br /><br />Abstract&nbsp\;<br />This seminar will
discuss a large nationwide study on the practice of polygamy that was
undertaken by an NGO Sisters in Islam (SIS) together with five key
university researchers in Malaysia in late 2008. Yaso Nadarajah was
invited to be a key investigator on this project. Though sanctioned by
Islam\, polygamy is a critical issue for Malaysia's Muslims\, who make
up nearly two-thirds of the country's 28 million people. Under Malaysian
law\, it is legal for Muslim men to marry as many as four wives\,
although they must obtain permission from an Islamic\, or Syariah Court
to marry more than one. Women&rsquo\;s groups say it has become easier
for men to obtain permission to take multiple wives in recent years\; a
development which they claim coincides with a rise in Islamic
conservatism in Malaysia. The impetus for this research arose from
Sisters-in-Islam&rsquo\;s dealings with people\, especially women and
children in critical financial or domestic violence situations due to
polygamous arrangements. First public presentation in July 2010 in
Malaysia from initial 2000 surveys and 70 in-depth interviews has opened
up fresh debates about Syariah Law\, family law and community
well-being. This study is currently being written up as a special
journal edition as well as an edited book collection.&nbsp\;<br /><br

SUMMARY:Interrogating Australia’s Regional Interventions
DESCRIPTION:<p>The Human Security Program of RMIT&rsquo\;s Global Cities
Research\nInstitute is hosting a one-day workshop to examine and
problematize Australia&rsquo\;s\napproach to intervention. The workshop
will be held on <strong>Friday</strong> <strong>12th
November\n2010 </strong>in the University Function Room at RMIT&rsquo\;s
city campus in Melbourne. Interested\npeople are invited to attend this

workshop will open with a keynote presentation by\nInnovation Professor

 conceptual\nquestions of: &ldquo\;<em>what constitutes
 an\nintervention?</em>&rdquo\; and &ldquo\;<em>when are
they\njustified?</em>&rdquo\; In the second half of the day\,
researchers with field\nexperience will present a series of
 site-specific case studies of Australia&rsquo\;s\ninterventions\,
responding to the question of &ldquo\;<em>how could the intervention
 have occurred otherwise and how could it be\ndone better?</em>&rdquo\;
Throughout the day there will be ample opportunity for\nattendees to
engage in discussion with panel members and presenters.</p>\n<p>A more
detailed program and list\nof participants will be circulated closer to
the date of the workshop.</p>\n<p>For further information and to
